Distance was a research machine but has been handed down to COSI. It has an identical twin that remains unallocated.
It runs Ubuntu 14.04 for compatibility with BigBlueButton, which it the only service that it hosts.
BigBlueButton is an open-sourced Web Conferencing system that allows remote presentations. It is being pushed towards educational use and allows viewing and annotation of presentations and communication through chat, video, and audio.
Currently, the main client runs on Adobe Flash, but a HTML5 client is being developed to support desktop and mobile platforms.
A regular installation of Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS is reccomended by BigBlueButton. Next the BBB server is set up as shown on their official Install Guide. (The current version of BigBlueButton is 0.9)
To add support for the HTML5 client, follow the HTML5 Development Guide.
