What is it?
Hike By Reference is a thing that we sometimes do. It involves hiking Ampersand Mountain in reference (hehe) to the & operator in the C programming language.
It is good to take a group picture at the top, usually with a linux flag, maybe some books from our Library or an inflatable penguin.
The hike takes several hours, bring adequate food and lots of water. The peak itself is about an hour and a half from Clarkson by road. The town of Tupper Lake is a good place to stop before climbing.
A good itinerary is to depart no later than 9:30, stop at the Tupper Lake Save-A-Lot to buy food and use restrooms, get on the trail by noon, reach the summit by 2:30 assuming a steady pace, Head back down around 3:pm, get back to the cars around 4:30, and return to Potsdam around 6:pm. If slower hikers are along, it might make sense to depart earlier, around 8:30 for a comfortable pace.
