The Applied CS Labs have three physical networks.

Clarkson Network

Purpose

Our connection to the Clarkson network is used to provide every machine access to the Internet and to our subsection of the Clarkson network, which is used for management purposes.

Understanding the Cables

In the Server Room, blue patch cables are used to denote links to Clarkson's network and various gray cables for servers may also be connected to the Clarkson network. Outside of the server room, any cable not identified as an internal network cable is likely on Clarkson's network.

DHCP/DNS

OIT provides dynamic DHCP/DNS to the labs on the 128.153.144.* subnet. All machines using DHCP in the labs receive a host name of <name>.sclab.clarkson.edu. We also have some static IPs reserved on the 128.153.144.* subnet for our lab PCs to use.

See List of Static IPs - 144 Subnet for more information on the static IPs used on the 128.153.144.* subnet.

We also have control of the 128.153.145.* subnet, which is primarily used for servers running in the labs. All systems on this subnet have a static IP and DNS is delegated to us by OIT. Most systems on this subnet have *.cslabs.clarkson.edu DNS entry, which is provided by Dns1 & Dns2.

See List of Static IPs - 145 Subnet for more information on the static IPs used on the 128.153.145.* subnet.

Other Information

See Network Port Layout.

Internal Network

Purpose

The internal network is used to connect all of the lab PCs and some of our servers to an isolated gigabit network. This network is primarily used for projects and ghosting the labs.

Understanding the Cables

In the Server Room, the internal network wires are denoted with green patch cables. Outside of the server room, internal network cables are marked with green electrical tape at each end of the network cable. There are also various gray network cables, which only exist in the server room, that connect various servers to the internal network.

See Network Port Layout for more information.

DNS

DNS is provided for the internal network by Dns1 & Dns2. All DNS entries are <name>.int.cslabs.clarkson.edu.

Server Room Network

Purpose

This network is used to physically isolate critical applications, such as AoE or iSCSI, from external influence. It is also used for some management purposes when needed.

Understanding the Cables

In the server room, gray cables are used for the server room network; however, we also use gray cables for connecting the servers to the other two networks. All of these cables should be labeled "<name> SR."

DNS

DNS is provided for the server room network by Dns1 & Dns2. All DNS entries are <name>.sr.cslabs.clarkson.edu.
